Description

Trujillo Castle is a medieval fortress located in Trujillo, province of Cáceres, Extremadura, in the highest part of the hill Cabeza de Zorro. It is a castle of Islamic origin, built largely between the ninth and tenth centuries, although with later reforms and reuses after the Christian conquest of the city in 1232. Its construction combines masonry with ashlars reused from Roman constructions, and organizes the enclosure in two main areas: the Patio de Armas and the Albacara. It preserves a system of towers and defensive walls that respond to the original military function of the fortress, visible from most of Trujillo's surroundings. Inside, there is a small chapel dedicated to San Pablo, built in the 16th century to commemorate the reconquest of Trujillo. The complex is part of the historic center of the city and is one of its most representative heritage elements, both for its defensive value and for its relationship with the historical evolution of Trujillo.
