Description

Roita Castle is a historic mountain site located in the municipality of Sos del Rey Católico, in the region of Cinco Villas, province of Zaragoza. It stands a few kilometers from the town center, with access by forest track from the road between Sos and Uncastillo, and dominates a border territory with Navarra. The enclave preserves the ruins of a medieval fortress perched on the mountain range, in a strategic position of surveillance of the environment. The visible structure has a trapezoidal plan, with a larger side of about 25 meters, two towers on opposite corners and the remains of a small parade ground. The eastern tower, square in plan and about 6 meters on each side, is the best preserved; arrow slits, a rectangular window and part of its interior distribution on several floors can still be seen. Elongated outbuildings with pointed arch access and masonry and ashlar construction elements are also preserved. The complex is of interest for its archaeological and landscape value, as it allows us to read the defensive architecture of the frontier in the Middle Ages and to understand the role of territorial control between Aragon and Navarra. SIPCA lists it as an Asset of Cultural Interest, Monument, and places its construction in medieval times, with references to a previous Muslim fortress and later reconstructions.

How to get there

By car: from Sos del Rey Católico take the direction of Petilla de Aragón along the forest track that goes southeast; the published references place the detour around km 7-8 from Sos and the final access is by rural road. Parking: there is no specific official parking lot; it is usual to leave the car at the beginning of the track or in the available lay-bys next to the road, without blocking the path.[11 Trail: the itinerary indicated in local brochures is part of the Sos del Rey Católico-Castillo de Roita route (GR 1), but no reliable distance and elevation gain are available here; it is advisable to assume a rural walk of moderate difficulty. Footwear: boots or hiking shoes with grippy soles. Best season: spring and autumn. Warnings: the castle is in progressive ruin and it is advisable not to climb walls or towers; the access can be by track with irregular road surface and the weather can complicate it during the rainy season.[8
