Description
La Mea Waterfall is a seasonal waterfall located in the surroundings of Puentedey, in the Merindad de Sotoscueva, Burgos, within the natural area of Ojo Guareña. The official itinerary of the Tourism of Castilla y León identifies it as route PRC-BU 36, with a linear and short route, designed for a visit on foot from the road between Puentedey and Quintanilla-Valdebodres. It is a waterfall embedded in a limestone ravine, fed by rainwater and meltwater collected by the stream of Mea, from the surroundings of the Canales de Dulla. Its fall occurs over a rock cut and, when it carries water, the whole offers a very marked image of karst landscape, with walls and a narrow channel shaped by erosion. The most interesting thing for the visitor is the combination between the waterfall and the small canyon that shelters it, where there are formations and riverside and hillside vegetation such as gall oaks, holm oaks, maples, poplars and willows. The waterfall does not have a continuous flow, so its presence depends a lot on recent rains or snowmelt, and therefore its scenic interest is especially high at those times. Its tourist value is also based on its proximity to Puentedey, one of the most unique enclaves of the Merindades region due to its natural bridge over the Nela river. In this context, the visit is usually understood as a brief excursion that allows to see two very remarkable geological elements in the same environment: the modeling of the water on the limestone rock and the rural landscape of the region.
How to get there
By car: from Puentedey or Quintanilla Valdebodres it is accessed by the local road between both localities; the descriptions coincide in a lay-by next to the road, a short distance from Puentedey, signposted for the waterfall. Parking: small hole or siding on the shoulder, with limited spaces; it is an unguarded and free parking lot. Trail: about 0.6-0.83 km round trip, with gentle slope and low difficulty; between 10 and 25 min. depending on pace. Footwear: sports or light mountain footwear, useful if the terrain is wet. Best season: spring and periods of rain or thaw. Warnings: the flow is very variable; in summer it can carry little water. Caution should be exercised when approaching the falls or slippery areas.[10
