Description
The bell tower of the church of Bagergue is part of the parish church of Sant Feliu, in Bagergue (Naut Aran, Lleida), and the resource is correctly identified as an element of the local religious architecture, not as an independent building. The parish church is of Romanesque origin and dates from the 13th century, with later alterations and extensions that altered its original configuration. The location indicated, in the center of Bagergue, coincides with the documented location of the temple. The most visible element is the bell tower, with a square base and pyramidal top, integrated in a complex that preserves Romanesque features and later additions. Municipal and tourist sources describe a nave that formerly had a barrel vault, with two chapels per side and preserved former arches, as well as a western door with three archivolts in degradation. The whole presents, therefore, a mixture of Romanesque and Baroque or modern transformations. Among the outstanding patrimonial elements of the interior, a stone altar altar of pre-Romanesque tradition, a Christ of Gothic transition and a Renaissance image of the Virgin in the chapel of the presbytery are documented. A pre-Romanesque funerary stele of interest is also mentioned. The construction history of the temple includes an enlargement in 1524 and successive reforms, which explains the stratified character of the building. Because of its chronology, artistic value and survival in the historical landscape of the village, the bell tower is one of the heritage landmarks of Bagergue and a relevant testimony of the evolution of the church of Sant Feliu from its medieval construction to its later modifications.
