C.I. de la Antigua Cárcel de Sepúlveda (Old Prison of Sepúlveda)

The C.I. de la Antigua Cárcel de Sepúlveda is an interpretation center installed in the old prison of the town, in Sepúlveda (Segovia), next to the wall and in the Plaza del Trigo. It is a heritage resource of historical and informative character, today integrated in the network of Museums of Castilla y León and in the local tourist offer. Construction of the building began in 1543, so its origin dates back to the 16th century. It was born as a municipal or council prison and later became a party prison after the administrative reorganization of 1834. It retained its penitentiary use until the 20th century and, after its rehabilitation, it was adapted to house a permanent exhibition on imprisonment and the history of prisons. Architecturally, the building maintains the image of a historic construction linked to the walled enclosure, with three floors and a direct relationship with the urban defenses of Sepulveda. The sources consulted emphasize that part of the preserved facilities correspond to the prison stage, especially the interior distribution and the spaces associated with its former prison use. Its heritage value lies both in the building itself and in its musealization, which explains the daily life of the inmates, the administration of justice and the social role of historic prisons. It is, therefore, a unique example of civil heritage reused as a cultural and interpretive space.
