Description
The Municipal Public Library of Llerena Arturo Gazul is a cultural facility and public library located in Llerena, province of Badajoz, on Santiago Street, next to the church of Santiago and at the coordinates indicated. The building occupies the former chapel of the Hospital de San Juan de Dios, one of the historical pieces linked to hospital care in the town. The building preserves a baroque style façade and an arcaded courtyard with four galleries, features that make it unique within the historic center of Llerena. The construction dates back to 1759, so the building is from the 18th century and is related to the late baroque architecture of institutional and religious character. Its heritage interest lies not only in its current use as a municipal library, but in the reuse of a historic building preserved and adapted for public service. This continuity of use helps to keep visible the memory of the old Hospital de San Juan de Dios and its chapel, integrating them into the contemporary cultural life of the city. Because of its location, typology and preserved elements, it constitutes a heritage tourism resource of local interest in the historic center of Llerena, especially because of the combination of architectural value, care history and current cultural function.
