The Río Verde Canyon is a natural area of great interest for canyoning, located on the eastern slope of the Sierra de Almijara, within the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara, and Alhama Natural Park, which straddles the provinces of Granada and Málaga. This canyon, also known as the Barranco de Las Chorreras, has a substantial water flow even during the summer, featuring pools of clean, crystal-clear water, natural water slides, and a sunny channel that makes the descent easier. Its total length is approximately 20 kilometers, flowing into the Mediterranean Sea through the municipalities of Lentegí, Jete, and Almuñécar. From the visitor center, you can see waterfalls, suspension bridges, and a lookout point offering views of the canyon and the river below. The area is rich in biodiversity and offers a geological and biological landscape of great value, protected as part of the Natural Park. It is considered one of the most significant canyons in Andalusia and an ideal place to get started in canyoning, with different difficulty levels for adults and children. The best time to visit is during spring or summer, when the water flow is steady and conditions are optimal for the descent. In fall and winter, access can be more difficult due to possible rain and higher water levels. The route is linear, and it is recommended to hike both rivers for a complete experience lasting about 6 hours, or just the Río Verde for 4 hours and 30 minutes.
