Description
The Balcón de los Amorosos is a viewpoint integrated in the castle and walls of Castellar de la Frontera, in the historic center known as Pueblo Viejo, within the municipality of Castellar de la Frontera, Cádiz. Its patrimonial function is clearly landscape and defensive: it is part of the medieval fortified set that organizes the high nucleus of the town and allows to open visually to the natural environment of the reservoir of the Guadarranque and the Natural Park of the Alcornocales. The monumental complex to which the resource belongs is associated with a fortress of medieval origin, with a chronology generally located in the Middle Ages and, according to informative descriptions of the castle itself, in the thirteenth century for the main Islamic phase. The wall and the interior rooms have undergone later transformations, so the element should not be understood as an isolated work, but as part of a broader historical fortified system. In this context, the Balcón de los Amorosos stands out for its value as an observation point within the walled enclosure, linked to the scenic character of the castle and the reading of the border landscape of the Campo de Gibraltar. Its tourist interest comes both from its location inside a medieval fortification and the panoramic views it offers over the surrounding territory.
