Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés is a large natural mountain and border area in the southwest of Ourense, where granite reliefs, valleys and the presence of the Limia River draw a transitional landscape between the Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds. It has been recognized as a natural park since 1993 and forms, together with the neighboring Portuguese Peneda-Gerês, a large cross-border territory protected within the Gerês-Xurés Biosphere Reserve. From the park's visitor points you can see steep mountain ranges, oak and scrub-covered slopes, outcrops of bare rock and, on many routes, the remains of old paths, traditional villages and historical elements linked to livestock use and mountain communications. The combination of water, granite and vegetation is one of its landscape hallmarks. Its interest is not only scenic: the area preserves a remarkable biological diversity and a cultural heritage closely linked to the territory, with signposted itineraries and regulated access sectors in some areas. The presence of free routes and others that have been arranged reflects a model of visitation that seeks to make public use and conservation compatible. The best time to visit is usually spring and autumn, when the flow of streams and waterfalls is more pleasant and temperatures are comfortable for walking. In summer it can be hot in the lower areas, and in winter the mountain becomes harsher and more changeable.
