Description
The Braña Castrillo Recreational Area is a recreational area located in Bárcena Mayor, in the municipality of Los Tojos, in the interior of Cantabria. It is located next to the Argoza river, in an environment of mountain and riverbank linked to the landscape of the Saja-Besaya Natural Park, very close to one of the best preserved rural areas in the region. It is an esplanade of rest and bathing associated with a natural pool, so its main interest is landscape and leisure in contact with the river environment. The environment combines water, riverside woodland and mountain slopes, with the added value of being in the vicinity of Bárcena Mayor, a village of traditional mountain architecture and remarkable historical preservation. The visit is interesting both for the landscape and for its function as a place to stay and refresh in summer, in a stretch of river that acts as a natural complement to the tour of the historic center of the village. Its relevance is mainly local and environmental, offering a space for enjoyment in an enclave of high landscape quality within a protected area and very frequented by hikers and visitors to the valley.
How to get there
By car: from Bárcena Mayor, take the track/road that goes up the Argoza River towards the outside of the village; access takes a few minutes and the area is about a 20-minute walk from the town center. Parking: Bárcena Mayor does not allow interior access by car; there is a parking lot at the entrance of the village and from there you can continue on foot. Trail: short, flat walk from the village; there is no single reliable data on the exact distance to the area. Footwear: comfortable shoes with non-slip soles, especially if you want to continue to the shore or longer routes. Best season: spring, summer and early autumn. Warnings: in high season it is advisable to arrive early because of the pressure of visitors; if you continue along the riverbed or valley trails, there may be wet and slippery sections.
