Description

The Alto de la Cruz is a natural viewpoint located in Peñalba de Santiago, in the municipality of Ponferrada, province of León, within the mountain landscape of the Montes Aquilianos and the environment of the Valle del Silencio. Its hillside location allows a wide view over the valley and the peaks surrounding the village, one of the most unique enclaves of El Bierzo for its isolation and strong landscape personality. It is a panoramic point designed to stop and contemplate the abrupt relief, the forests and the succession of mountains that frame Peñalba de Santiago. The interest of the visit lies in the reading of the landscape: the head of the valley, the slopes that descend towards the stream and the feeling of mountainous enclosure that characterizes this nucleus, seated in a narrow valley bottom and protected by notable elevations. The area is also interesting for its relationship with a village of high heritage value, declared a Historic-Artistic Site and a Site of Cultural Interest, in an environment where nature and traditional architecture are clearly integrated. The viewpoint thus complements the visit to the whole of Peñalba de Santiago, offering an outside perspective of the enclave and its immediate geographical context. Its relevance is above all scenic and touristic: it functions as a window to the mountainous and secluded character of the town, and helps to understand why Peñalba de Santiago is one of the most recognized destinations of Leon's rural heritage.
